On Sunday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for progress in reforming the right to asylum in the European Union, following the death of at least sixty migrants off the coast of Italy.
While expressing her "deep sadness" in a tweet about the "tragedy" of the migrants' drowning, von der Leyen called for "doubling efforts related to the legal framework for migrants and the right to asylum, and the action plan for the Mediterranean Sea."
The most sensitive part of an agreement that is supposed to be concluded before the end of the term of the European Parliament in 2024 concerns a better sharing of responsibilities for receiving asylum seekers among EU countries, a matter that has divided members of the bloc since the migrant crisis of 2015-2016.
At least sixty migrants died on Sunday after their boat sank off the coast of the Italian city of Crotone in the Calabria region, where Italian coastguard personnel managed to rescue 80 people alive.
