Amman — Insults are a sign of bad manners, and publicly expressing them is blatant foolishness — a cartoonish act that holds no weight. Persisting in accusations, lies, and fabricated stances is a disgrace that exposes both the person and the malicious intentions of those who trained, encouraged, and pushed them to speak out against the homeland and its symbols.
The events of the past week, involving incitement against state institutions in a broad sense, are troubling. If such actions continue unchecked, tensions will build, matters will grow more complicated, and control may be lost — undermining national dignity and emboldening provocateurs who manipulate public sentiment for their own ends.
The despicable slogans chanted by a few protesters found no real echo among the wider crowd, except for a small group parroting them without understanding. As for those gathered, they were either party-affiliated individuals compelled to protest, or onlookers and informants reporting to their political handlers.
It is widely understood that these slogans were crafted behind closed doors and in dimly lit gatherings. They do not reflect the values of honorable Jordanians. A more acceptable slogan would have been “All of Jordan stands with Palestine,” because that’s the reality — Jordan, from its leadership to its citizens, has stood firmly for Palestine in ways few other Arab or Islamic countries have.
Insults aimed at the army and security forces hold no weight. Ignoring them, however, would be a mistake. Those responsible — and those who guide them from the shadows — are not on par with the army nor capable of matching its stature. Their conspiracy under the cover of night only aims to provoke youth into rebellion and spread divisive rhetoric.
Yes, we all oppose the enemy, but we are also aware of the tactics of its agents and the toxic slogans that serve its agenda. Jordan has long paid the price for its principled stance on regional issues, especially the Palestinian cause — a stance some in the Arab world resent.
Freedom of expression in Jordan is protected and broad, but it must be responsible. If laws regulate speech among individuals, they must certainly regulate speech that harms the nation, its institutions, and sovereignty. Such acts are crimes that must not be tolerated.
We reject the claim that “all of Jordan supports a particular faction.” Jordan supports the entire Palestinian people, not just a single group that represents a small segment of the national Palestinian fabric.
Finally, to those behind such actions: fear God, and do not forget the destruction, displacement, and bloodshed that has plagued the region — all of which has only served to justify continued aggression and expansion by the enemy.
