Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that "there is no winner in a trade war, and the world's opposition will only lead to self-isolation." This was said during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Beijing on Friday, according to the official CCTV channel.
He added, "For over 70 years, China’s development has relied on self-reliance and hard work—never depending on others' charity or fearing unjust oppression. Regardless of how the external environment changes, China will remain confident and focused on efficiently managing its own affairs."
The Chinese president also said, "China and the European Union are two major global economies and strong supporters of economic globalization and free trade. Together, their economies represent more than a third of the global economy, and they have formed a closely intertwined economic relationship. China and the EU should fulfill their international responsibilities, support economic globalization, and the global trade environment jointly, and work together to oppose unilateral bullying. This not only protects their legitimate rights and interests but also defends international justice and fairness, maintaining international rules and order."
These comments come as the rest of the world received a 90-day reprieve from U.S. tariffs, while the U.S. escalated its tariffs on China. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would now impose an additional 145% tariff on all Chinese goods entering the United States. In response, Beijing increased its tariffs on U.S. goods from 34% to 84% starting April 10th.
