The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said yesterday, Friday, that the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is tragic for the Palestinians, as the occupation of their land for more than fifty years has led to gross and repeated violations of human rights.
Türk added, in an interview regarding his report on occupied Palestine, that no one can wish to live in this way or imagine that forcing people to live in these desperate conditions can lead to a permanent solution, noting that the occupation has deepened deprivation, expropriation of property and violation of rights. Including the right to life.
The High Commissioner referred to the riots by hundreds of settlers in the town of Hawara, which resulted in the death of a Palestinian, the wounding of two others, the stabbing of another, and one person was severely beaten, in addition to setting fire to Palestinian homes and shops and vandalizing dozens of cars. In addition, 390 people were injured and three ambulances were attacked. .
The High Commissioner denounced what an extremist Israeli minister said about "erasing" the village of Hawara, and considered that this incomprehensible statement "incites violence and hostility."
In his report, Türk highlighted a number of recommendations, including taking steps to ensure that the Israeli security forces operate in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, within the frameworks defined by human rights law for law enforcement operations.
He also stressed the importance of treating all cases of violence equally, as the law will not be a law if it is applied to only one party, stressing the importance of ensuring real accountability for violations.
Türk stressed the need to end settlements in the occupied land, and to achieve a two-state solution with an end to the occupation and mutual recognition of the legitimate rights of all Palestinians and Israelis to live in dignity, peace and security.
