More than 3,000 foreign nationals have been deported since the beginning of this year’s intensive inspection campaign for violating labour laws, according to Labour Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Al-Zyoud on Monday.

Speaking on the ‘Sawt Al-Mamlaka’ programme, Al-Zyoud said regulating the labour market—including non-Jordanian labour—is the responsibility of the Labour Ministry. He noted that the current government sees no need for what is known as “status correction,” which includes waiving work permit fees.

He explained that the 2021 status correction campaign revealed a large number of foreign workers failed to comply with legal requirements. Any adjustments regarding foreign labour are made based on employer requests across various sectors, he added.

Al-Zyoud stated that 54,000 foreign workers have not regularised their status or obtained valid work permits since 2021.

He noted the figures are constantly changing, as many workers have either been deported or left Jordan voluntarily because they do not wish to comply with the law. Some, however, have legalised their status through employers in different sectors.

The ministry rejects employer requests to waive penalties for undocumented workers, he stressed, adding that all procedures aim to regulate the labour market and ensure all workers in Jordan abide by the law.

Al-Zyoud confirmed that inspection campaigns are ongoing to monitor foreign workers and verify their legal status.
