US President Donald Trump on Wednesday withdrew his nomination of Dr Janet Nishiewat, who is of Jordanian origin, for the position of US Surgeon General—just one day before her scheduled confirmation hearing before the Senate.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced Dr Casey Means as the new nominee, writing: “Her academic achievements, along with her tireless work, are truly remarkable. Dr Casey Means has the potential to become one of the greatest surgeons general in US history.”

Casey Means’ brother, Calley Means, serves as a senior White House adviser and special government employee. He has worked closely with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and promoted many of his health proposals.

Trump said Nishiewat, who faced harsh criticism from right-wing influencer Laura Loomer, will take on a different role under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
