This July, the historic Italian city of Assisi in the heart of Umbria is set to welcome the international traveling exhibition Jordan: Dawn of Christianity, following its remarkable success at the Vatican earlier this year. The exhibition will be held at the magnificent Monte Frumentario Palace, in collaboration with the Municipality of Assisi.
The Assisi stop carries deep spiritual and symbolic significance, as the city is the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi—an icon of peace, humility, and interfaith dialogue. Since the Middle Ages, Assisi has been one of the world’s most important Christian pilgrimage destinations, attracting over five million pilgrims and visitors annually seeking spiritual reflection in a setting that blends beauty and holiness.
This event takes on even greater meaning in 2025, declared a Jubilee Year by the late Pope Francis under the theme Pilgrims of Hope. The Jubilee is a special holy year celebrated every 25 years in the Catholic Church.
Jordan’s participation in this historic moment reaffirms its profound spiritual legacy as one of the foundational lands of the Christian faith and an integral part of the Holy Land. The Kingdom has long drawn the attention of the Christian world, notably during Pope Francis’s 2014 visit to Jordan, where he toured the Baptism Site on the Jordan River and praised the country’s message of peaceful coexistence.
The exhibition showcases the five sites in Jordan officially recognised by the Vatican as Christian pilgrimage destinations:
Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Baptism Site)
Mount Nebo
Our Lady of the Mountain Church in Anjara
Mar Elias Hill
Machaerus Fortress
Leading them is the Baptism Site—where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist—considered one of Christianity’s holiest locations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The exhibition aims to promote religious tourism in Jordan as a key destination for Christian pilgrimage, bridging faith and culture while enhancing the Kingdom’s spiritual and international presence.
Jordan: Dawn of Christianity is a living invitation to pilgrimage, reflection, and connection—where Assisi and Jordan meet in a cross-border dialogue of faith, in a time that longs for hope and renewal.
