The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) decided, on Tuesday, to approve 12 groups of 4 teams in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and will include 48 teams for the first time, on the sidelines of the 73rd General Assembly in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.

FIFA had increased the number of teams participating in this edition from 32 to 48, and the number of matches would increase from 64 to 104.

FIFA considered that this new system "reduces the risk of collusion, ensures that all teams play at least 3 matches, and provides a balanced rest for all participating teams."
