Yedioth Ahronoth reports that Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar’ has survived three assassination attempts in the past seven months.
The first attempt occurred in March, when a Turkish unit detected suspicious activity as Golani left the People’s Palace. Three security guards restrained the assailant, who was arrested and interrogated. The incident was kept secret by Shar’ to maintain an image of unchallenged leadership.
The second attempt, more complex, took place during Shar’s visit to Daraa near the Jordanian border. Skilled Syrian and Turkish security personnel noticed two suspicious individuals and quickly altered the president’s route.
The third and most dangerous attempt involved a would-be assassin setting an ambush on the road Shar’ was expected to take from the presidential palace in Damascus. Though details remain undisclosed, the incident has fuelled speculation over his abrupt departure from the capital.
US Special Envoy to Syria and Ambassador to Turkey, Thomas Barak, publicly confirmed the attempts, stressing the urgent need to protect Shar’ and warning of severe threats.
