Palestinian sources tell Al Jazeera that Palestinian Authority security forces on Friday noon dispersed a protest in Nablus, northern occupied West Bank, demanding an end to the genocide and starvation in Gaza Strip.
Palestinian media circulated footage showing tear gas fired at demonstrators marching in solidarity with Gaza and calling for an end to the ongoing war. Several protesters were arrested.
Last week, PA security forces cracked down on multiple protests across the occupied West Bank condemning starvation policies and continued Israeli aggression on the besieged strip.
The independent rights group “Lawyers for Justice,” based in Ramallah, strongly condemned the PA crackdown on peaceful demonstrations, calling it a “blatant violation” of the Palestinian Basic Law and international treaties.
In a statement, the group said excessive force against unarmed civilians and targeting activists undermines human rights principles and the right to peaceful assembly and expression.
It also denounced the “arbitrary arrests” of several protesters, saying the move aims to silence dissent and prevent any grassroots movement demanding an end to the assault on Gaza.
The group urged local and international organisations and UN human rights bodies to pressure for an end to the genocide in Gaza and to hold security personnel accountable for attacking and unlawfully detaining peaceful protesters.
Israel has waged a campaign of mass killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement in Gaza since 7 October 2023, defying all international calls and orders by the International Court of Justice to stop.
