Authorities across multiple countries issued tsunami alerts on Wednesday following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula—the strongest quake to hit the region since 1952.

China’s tsunami alert centre warned of possible damage along parts of the country’s eastern coastline, stating: “Based on the latest analysis and alerts, a tsunami triggered by the quake is expected to affect some coastal areas.”

In Russia, the Emergency Ministry confirmed flooding in Severo-Kurilsk, located in the northern Kuril Islands, due to tsunami waves from the massive quake.

Japan evacuated workers from the Fukushima nuclear plant as a precaution, while Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico issued their own tsunami warnings.

Ecuador ordered a “precautionary evacuation” of beaches in the Galápagos Islands, and Mexico urged residents to stay away from Pacific coastlines.
