Aqaba – Al-Nafoura Mall, owned by First Markets Company, a subsidiary of Jordan Duty Free Shops Company, has been awarded the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification, becoming the first shopping mall in Jordan and the first building in Aqaba to earn this prestigious global recognition for green building.
The award ceremony took place in Aqaba under the patronage of Eng. Shadi Al-Majali, Chairman of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority. It was attended by H.E. Omar Malhas, Chairman of the Social Security Investment Fund Board, H.E. Dr. Ezzedine Kanakrieh, Director of the Social Security Investment Fund, Aqaba Governor Ayman Al-Awaisheh, senior security officials, Khawaja Aftab Ahmed, Regional Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in the Middle East (representing the World Bank), as well as economic and social figures, environmental representatives, and IFC officials.
The EDGE certification is one of the world’s leading standards for energy-, water-, and material-efficient buildings, aiming to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability in construction and urban development.
This achievement crowns the efforts of the Jordan Duty Free Shops Company in applying best practices in sustainable design, reflecting its commitment to developing environmentally responsible projects that support the national vision for green development. It also enhances Aqaba’s position as a modern, eco-friendly economic and tourism hub.
The company affirmed that this milestone aligns with the aspirations of His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II to elevate Aqaba as a model for sustainable development and balanced urban growth in Jordan and the wider region.
