Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said 185 people died from malnutrition in August, the highest monthly toll since the worsening humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.
In a statement Tuesday, the ministry said 70 deaths occurred after Gaza was officially classified as famine-hit by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). Among them were 12 children who died from hunger-related complications.
Statistics severe deterioration among vulnerable groups: 43,000 children under five suffer from malnutrition, while more than 55,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women face acute shortages of essential nutrients. About 67% of pregnant women have anaemia, the highest rate recorded in years.
The ministry warned of an escalating humanitarian and health catastrophe amid limited emergency response and severe shortages of food and medical supplies. It renewed its urgent appeal to the international community, UN and humanitarian organisations to act immediately to save lives and halt the spread of famine threatening hundreds of thousands in Gaza.
