UNICEF on Friday warned that childhood cannot survive in Gaza City as Israel prepares to seize control.
Spokeswoman Tess Ingram said in a statement carried by Sputnik that the world is sounding the alarm over an intensified military assault on Gaza City, threatening catastrophe for nearly 1 million people still there.
“This unthinkable thing is not imminent, it is already happening. Escalation is underway,” she said.
Ingram noted that malnutrition and famine are weakening children’s bodies, displacement is depriving them of shelter and care, while bombardment threatens their every move. “This is what famine looks like in a war zone, and it was everywhere I looked in Gaza City,” she added.
She stressed the situation is not accidental but a direct result of choices that turned Gaza City and the Strip as a whole into a place where lives are under attack from every angle every day.
The plan to seize Gaza City involves the forced displacement of about 1 million Palestinians to the south, where residents already face unprecedented levels of hunger. UN agencies warn of worsening famine and rising deaths from malnutrition, especially among children, the elderly, the sick and people with disabilities. --(Petra)
