BUENOS AIRES – Argentina captain Lionel Messi expressed delight after featuring in his side’s win over Venezuela, marking his farewell before retiring from international football after the 2026 World Cup.
Messi told the Argentine FA website: “These were wonderful days, I didn’t stop, I had no time to think. I just tried to enjoy the moments, and I was lucky to be with the fans.”
He added: “There are so many emotions. I’ve lived a lot of experiences in this stadium. It’s always a pleasure to play in Argentina with our fans. I was emotional with the anthem and my children. Many thoughts came to me, but it was a beautiful day.”
Messi reflected on his career: “We enjoyed playing match after match for many years. I’m very happy. Reaching this level is what I always dreamed of, and I hope to finish the year well.”
He continued: “I love Barcelona, it was my dream to play here too. Today was the last one because of the points I earned here. When I’m happy, I enjoy it.”
The Argentina star concluded: “I don’t want this to end, but I know the moment is approaching. It will happen when it has to, and until then I live it step by step, day by day.”
Messi earlier confirmed he will retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup, making the Venezuela match his last on Argentine soil.
