Axios reported Tuesday, citing two informed sources, that Israel has presented Syria with a detailed proposal for a new security agreement that includes a proposed map extending from southwest Damascus to the border with the occupied territories.

The report said the Israeli proposal is modelled on the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, which divided the Sinai Peninsula into three zones (A, B, C), with varying security arrangements and different levels of demilitarisation depending on the distance from the border with the occupied territories.

According to Axios, Israel is demanding that Syria accept a wide demilitarised zone and a no-fly zone within its territory, with no changes on the Israeli side of the border.

Under the proposal, the area southwest of Damascus would be divided into three zones, allowing Syrians to maintain different levels of forces and types of weapons in each zone.

The proposal also calls for extending the buffer zone an additional 2 kilometres inside Syrian territory. In the strip adjacent to the buffer zone, closest to the border with Israel on the Syrian side, no military forces or heavy weapons would be permitted, though Syria would be allowed to maintain police and internal security forces.
