Greater Jerash Municipality received an Italian grant worth 1.8 million dinars to connect the ancient and modern parts of the city and develop its commercial centre, according to Municipal Committee head Mohammad Bani Yassin.
Bani Yassin said Saturday the project includes upgrading the city centre, Hashemite Square and the old market, removing visual clutter such as improperly placed signs, and redesigning shopfronts to match the city’s aesthetic identity.
The municipality will also renovate pavements, extend the electricity network, and build accessible paths and concrete benches. Seven kiosks will be set up in Hashemite Square, along with new signage and greenery to improve the city’s urban landscape.
He added that a service office was opened in the industrial zone — which spans around 70 dunums — to assist tenants, noting plans to expand it to 100 dunums to relocate workshops such as carpentry and metalworking.
Bani Yassin said recent efforts included cleaning campaigns, lighting maintenance, and widening entrances to the industrial area, stressing that these steps form part of the city-linking project aimed at improving the urban scene and boosting tourism in Jerash.
