Hamas on Sunday affirmed its willingness to start immediately a prisoner exchange between detainees in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, as both sides prepare for indirect talks in Egypt on Monday following the movement’s approval to release Gaza detainees under US President Donald Trump’s proposal to end the war.

Several Arab and Muslim states described Hamas’s approval of the plan as a “real opportunity” to end the war in the devastated Gaza Strip.

A senior Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the movement is “very keen to reach a ceasefire agreement and immediately begin the prisoner exchange under current field conditions.”

He added, “The occupation must not obstruct implementation of President Trump’s plan. If it truly seeks an agreement, Hamas is ready.”

Another official said the talks will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, with the movement’s negotiators arriving Sunday from Doha.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government announced the talks will start Monday, saying, “The delegation will leave tonight, and discussions are expected to begin tomorrow,” noting they will be of a “technical nature.”

The White House confirmed Saturday that Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff had headed to Egypt, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope that detainees would return within days.
