New round of talks on US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to end the Gaza war resumes Wednesday, following two days of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel.
The talks, hosted by Egypt, bring together Qatar, the United States, and Turkey. Participants include Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer.
Indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel began in Egypt on 6 October and continued for four hours before resuming Tuesday “positively,” according to informed sources.
Discussions focused on mechanisms for releasing Israeli captives—both alive and deceased—in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, Israeli withdrawal maps, aid entry with ceasefire commencement, and transfer of Gaza’s administration to an independent Palestinian technocratic committee.
Hamas reportedly sought clarification on implementation mechanisms and guarantees preventing renewed Israeli aggression.
Trump’s plan stipulates that once all captives are freed, Israel will release 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Gazans detained after 7 October 2023, including all women and children. For each returned Israeli body, Israel will hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians.
