WASHINGTON — The US administration is preparing a draft speech for President Donald Trump to announce a possible agreement ending the war in Gaza, according to the Associated Press.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly handed Trump a handwritten memo during a White House meeting Wednesday, asking for his approval of a social media post related to a Middle East deal. The note read: “We need your approval for the post soon so you can announce the deal first.”
Trump hinted that the Middle East agreement was “very close,” saying it was “urgently needed.” When asked what remained for a Gaza deal to be finalised, he replied, “Either to finish it or sign it,” adding that he would likely travel to Egypt.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump said he might visit the Middle East this weekend, confirming that talks between Israel and Hamas were “very close.” He told reporters, “Our latest negotiations are with Hamas, and it looks like they’re going well. If so, we’ll probably leave Sunday, maybe Saturday.”
Rubio told reporters that Trump might travel to the region if a Gaza ceasefire deal is reached, noting that the decision rests with the president but expressing confidence that “he’d be interested if his schedule allows.” He added that negotiations had made “good progress” but cautioned that “there’s still work to be done,” recalling previous disappointments in similar situations.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Wednesday that the Sharm El Sheikh talks to end the Gaza war were progressing positively and reaffirmed Egypt’s continuous efforts toward peace. He also invited Trump to attend the signing ceremony in Egypt if a deal is finalised.
Evening sessions resumed Wednesday in Sharm El Sheikh, marking the third day of ceasefire talks aimed at finalising the 20-point plan proposed by Trump. Egyptian media described the atmosphere as “positive,” noting that the Hamas delegation had shown “great flexibility and responsibility,” paving the way for progress toward a final agreement.
