Amman – Parliament’s Labor, Social Development, and Population Committee, chaired by MP Moataz Abu Rumman, called for a return to winter time, citing social, economic, and health impacts of maintaining the current daylight-saving schedule.

The call came during a meeting attended by Deputy Speaker MP Mohammad Al-Marae, Minister of Local Administration Walid Al-Masri, Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman, Deputy Mayor of Amman Ahmad Al-Malkawei, representatives from Interior and Agriculture ministries, and other officials and civil society representatives.

Abu Rumman noted that the fixed schedule negatively affects students, workers, and families, as school and work start in dark morning hours, increasing traffic and health risks, and causing higher levels of daily fatigue.

MP Khamis Atiyeh previously submitted a parliamentary memorandum to the Prime Minister urging reconsideration of the daylight-saving decision, stressing that the issue goes beyond a simple clock change and concerns citizens’ safety and daily routines, especially amid rising stray dog incidents in early mornings.

The committee highlighted experiences from other countries showing that winter time provides better balance between daylight and work hours, improves productivity, and reduces accidents and late arrivals.

Citizens’ complaints were noted regarding difficulties adapting to the current schedule, particularly in areas lacking public lighting and early transport, affecting student and worker safety and family life.

Abu Rumman urged the government to reinstate winter time at its usual schedule, aligning with climatic, social, and economic conditions to ensure public safety and enhance quality of life.

The committee stressed that returning to winter time is essential to improve public comfort, reduce daily burdens, and reflects parliament’s commitment to citizens’ welfare.
