By Rum News Agency Director of the Unified Admission Coordination Unit, Muhannad Al-Khatib, confirmed on Thursday that the Higher Education Council is proceeding with its gradual plan to cut admission numbers in Medicine and Dentistry, given that both fields have reached saturation and are approaching stagnation due to high numbers of graduates from inside and outside the Kingdom. Speaking to Al-Mamlaka, Al-Khatib stated that the total number of medical students to be admitted for the 2026–2027 academic year has been capped at 640 across six public universities, alongside 256 students in dentistry across four universities. In previous remarks, Al-Khatib explained that the Higher Education Council approved a phased reduction strategy years ago to align enrollment with actual university capacities and preserve educational quality. He noted that intake for saturated majors is being reduced by up to 50 percent to curb rising graduate unemployment. Al-Khatib added that several other disciplines—particularly within engineering, humanities, and social sciences—are also experiencing stagnation or oversupply. The council is currently evaluating intake reductions between 35 percent and 40 percent for programs not actively sought by the labor market, with the affected fields to be announced following the approval of this year's enrollment quotas. By contrast, Al-Khatib expects high demand for majors closely linked to emerging industry needs, particularly artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, renewable energy, semiconductors, electric vehicle maintenance, and electromechanics. The Unified Admission Coordination Unit under the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced that the application period for undergraduate unified admission for the 2026–2027 academic year concluded on Thursday, with 74,340 total applications submitted. The unit reminded applicants that the deadline to settle application fees via the 'eFAWATEERcom' payment platform is set for 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 23, warning that unpaid applications will be canceled and disqualified from the selection process.
