Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi stated on Thursday that the presence of US forces in Jordan is framed under a defense cooperation agreement with the United States. In response to a question during a joint press conference in Vienna with the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Safadi pointed out that the presence of US forces in Jordan is framed according to this agreement, as these forces are stationed at Jordanian military bases and cooperate with the Jordanian Armed Forces across several fields. Safadi explained that this cooperation also exists with other partner countries that have forces in Jordan within the framework of defense cooperation, including Austria, with which the two countries signed an agreement months ago framing the presence of Austrian forces cooperating with Jordan in military training and exchange of expertise. He said that Jordan's cooperation with partner countries has extended for years and has been effective in counter-terrorism efforts. Safadi stressed that Jordan wants good relations with Iran, but achieving these relations requires addressing all previous causes of tension, which included supporting the smuggling of drugs and weapons into Jordan and attempts to tamper with its security and stability. Safadi also affirmed that Jordan will continue to exercise its sovereign and legal right to take all necessary steps to protect its security, stability, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens.
