The Lebanese Army on Friday arrested a relative of deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, alongside the son of a Lebanese drug lord who was with him, according to a security source speaking to Agence France-Presse (AFP). The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the army 'arrested three individuals, including Sulaiman Hilal al-Assad, a relative of deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,' while they were using drugs in the Bekaa region of eastern Lebanon. The source added that 'among those arrested was also the son of Noah Zaiter,' named Ali, referring to Lebanon's most prominent drug lord subject to US, British, and European sanctions, who was arrested by the Lebanese Army in late 2025. The identity of the third person was not disclosed. The source noted that the 'Syrian detainee is a civilian' and not a former officer, adding that the three detainees were transferred to the headquarters of the Lebanese Ministry of Defense for interrogation. Earlier this month, Lebanon detained a network of five people, including Syrians—one of whom was a former officer in Syrian intelligence—on suspicion of planning to launch attacks against government forces in the Syrian coastal region, according to a Lebanese judicial source speaking to AFP. Additionally, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced last month that it received a former officer from Lebanon who served during the Assad era, after his arrest under an in-absentia warrant issued against him charging him with murder and crimes against humanity. Who is Sulaiman al-Assad? Sulaiman al-Assad is the son of Hilal al-Assad, one of Bashar al-Assad's cousins. He previously commanded what was known as the 'National Defense' forces in Latakia Governorate during the years of the Syrian revolution. Source: Rum News Agency
