An ammonia gas leak at the Aqaba Industrial Complex on Monday resulted in 11 cases of minor-to-moderate asphyxiation, according to Dr. Nidal Al-Ouran, Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA). Civil Defense forces and security personnel rapidly responded to the scene, technical teams secured the site, and the leak was brought under control shortly after it occurred. Key Details of the Incident & Investigation Cause of the Leak: The leak occurred during maintenance work on an old pump or pressure device managed by a Japanese contracting firm within the complex, which released trapped residual ammonia gas. Casualties & Treatment: Eleven individuals suffered inhalation injuries ranging from mild to moderate. Medical care was provided on-site at the complex’s medical clinic, while several individuals were transferred to a local hospital for further evaluation. Safety & Regulatory Review: Dr. Al-Ouran confirmed that workers had taken initial safety precautions prior to the incident, but proximity to the release point led to inhalation injuries. ASEZA, in coordination with the Governor of Aqaba and relevant security bodies, has launched a formal review of all safety procedures to identify potential lapses and prevent future occurrences.
