Today, Friday, the Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria witnessed the largest anti-regime demonstration since the protests began about a month ago, with the participation of thousands, despite the shooting of demonstrators two days ago.
Participants in the demonstration told Agence France-Presse that between 3,500 and 4,000 people demonstrated today in Suwayda, and they added that the crowds that gathered in Karama Square were “larger than previous times.”
The demonstrators chanted, 'There is no forever, there is no forever. Long live Syria, and down with Assad.'
One of the demonstrators read a statement issued in coordination with one of the sheikhs of the Druze-majority governorate, in which he called for building a democratic national state and rejected “the Baath Party dictating its policies” to the people of the region.
Shooting and 3 demonstrators were injured - last Wednesday - when gunmen opened fire on them while they were trying to close the branch of the ruling Baath Party.
This was the first time that shots were fired at protesters during the recent demonstrations.
Demonstrators said they were not afraid, 'and will continue the peaceful movement until the end.'
For its part, the US Embassy in Syria expressed - yesterday, Thursday - its concern about the Syrian regime’s use of force in Suwayda, noting that the embassy does not provide consular services.
Protesters closed the offices of the Baath Party and removed pictures of former President Hafez al-Assad, during the days of the peaceful movement that began in mid-August.
The demonstrations began in Suwayda after the authorities decided to lift fuel subsidies, and evolved from a protest against the deteriorating economic conditions to demands to 'topple the regime.'
