Amman A recent Jordanian medical study showed that the death rate among the elderly who suffer from hip fractures is lower than the global rates, reaching 12.8 percent, compared to about 20 percent globally.
The study, which was presented at the thirteenth conference of the Society of Orthopedic Surgeons, yesterday, Saturday, was conducted on 1268 patients in government and private hospitals and lasted for three years, and its results were published in an international medical journal.
The conference stressed the importance of cooperation between orthopedics, osteoporosis, internal medicine, physiotherapy, psychiatry and anesthesia for the treatment of fractures of the elderly and their orthopedic surgeries.
The head of the association and the conference, Dr. Firas Al-Daboubi, said that during the conference, understandings were reached with international orthopedic associations to send orthopedic doctors for training in orthopedic subspecialties, noting that the conference recommended activating sub-groups in the association to conduct specialized workshops and lectures in all branches.
The conference also recommended expanding the introduction of robots that are used in orthopedic operations, especially the implantation of artificial joints, which require accurate measurements.
In turn, the head of the scientific committee of the conference, Dr. Anas Al-Tamimi, said that during the conference, the laparoscopic spine surgery was presented, and it was broadcast from the operating room at Al-Kindi Hospital to the conference hall, and a Jordanian and foreign team participated in the procedure.
He added, that fracture injuries constitute 30% of the cases that visit emergency departments in hospitals, calling for increased awareness of the importance of following public safety factors.
Al-Tamimi indicated that the conference discussed 70 lectures presented by 75 lecturers, including 25 foreign experts, in addition to 12 workshops on new treatment methods for the spine and foot deformities, recurrent shoulder dislocation, shoulder joint implantation (reversed shoulder), joint implants, and orthopedic correction.
