The Board of Directors of the Tourism Promotion Authority held a meeting at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority in the presence of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Makram Al-Qaisi, and the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Nayef Al-Fayez.
This meeting comes in view of the importance that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities attaches to the principle of complementarity and partnership with the Aqaba Special Economic Authority, as Aqaba represents a major tourist attraction and a gateway to the Jordanian tourism product. They discussed ways to get out of the current crisis that the tourism sector in particular, Jordan and the region in general are going through as a result of the Israeli aggression against our people in occupied Palestine.
The meeting touched on innovative marketing methods, opening new markets, promoting intra-Arab tourism, and supporting joint programs with Arab brothers and the African and Russian market. Al-Fayez also explained in his explanation of the challenges facing the Aqaba Special Economic Zone through canceling charter and low-cost flights to King Hussein Airport and canceling... Tourist ship trips increased significantly and rapidly, and this affected the upcoming season.
The Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners and Tourism Commissioner, Hamza Al-Hajj Hassan, also gave a briefing on the Authority’s plans to confront the crisis and fully cooperate with the Authority regarding unifying contractual and marketing efforts with the Authority to produce the best results and benefit from the accumulated experiences of all parties to serve the tourism sector in Aqaba. He presented details of the discount season and incentive plans to support domestic tourism.
The attendees discussed cooperation mechanisms between the Aqaba Authority and the Tourism Promotion Authority in order to expand the scope of contracting with low-cost and charter flights by increasing the number of flights on the one hand and upcoming destinations on the other hand.
Al-Qaisi stressed the need to support increased promotional campaigns for the discount system in the Aqaba region, especially hotels, restaurants and shops, in the current season, and to extensively advertise the raffles and prizes that await shoppers in Aqaba through Jordanna Jannah flights, which will include Aqaba. He also stressed the importance of continuous coordination with the Aqaba region. By forming a team from the Ministry and the Authority to follow up on the outcomes of the meeting and build on them.
The audience listened to the ministry’s human development and training plan from Dr. Imad Hijazin, Secretary-General of the Ministry, and a presentation from the Director of the Department of Public Antiquities, Dr. Fadi Al-Balaawi, about the department’s projects in Aqaba, such as the Byzantine Church, the Ayla Islamic site, and the restoration of the Aqaba Citadel and the museum.
Al-Fayez took Al-Qaisi and the accompanying delegation on a tour that included Aqaba Citadel, Sharif Hussein Palace, the museum project site, and Revolution Square, to see the efforts to develop the tourism product that aim to give local and foreign visitors a unique tourist experience at the highest levels.
It is worth noting that these meetings come after the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Authority called on the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Makram Al-Qaisi, to work intensively and effectively to get out of this crisis through consultation and true participation that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is pursuing in dealing with all components of the Jordanian tourism sector and his emphasis on the resilience and flexibility of the tourism sector. And its rapid ability to recover, which was proven by the 2023 numbers, as the Ministry fully achieved its targets for this year in October, before the crisis began.
