Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Saturday that the displacement of Palestinians is unacceptable, but he made clear that his country will deal with civilians humanely.
Shukri added at the Munich Security Conference, 'We do not intend to provide any safe areas or facilities, but if necessary, we will deal with the necessary humanity.'
Reuters reported on Friday that Egypt was preparing an area on its border with Gaza that could shelter Palestinians if an Israeli military attack on Rafah led to a mass exodus across the border. Sources described this as an emergency move.
Egypt has repeatedly denied making such preparations.
Shukri spoke about the reported construction operations on the border, saying, “This is completely hypothetical. We are always carrying out maintenance work on our borders, so I think this is jumping to conclusions about what these activities represent.”
The Governor of North Sinai had said earlier: The armed forces are establishing a logistics area to receive aid for Gaza.
The governor added that the area being constructed includes truck parking, warehouses, administrative offices, and drivers’ housing.
Egypt has repeatedly warned of the possibility that the devastating Israeli attack on Gaza would lead to the exodus of Palestinians to Sinai, something Cairo says is completely unacceptable.
Other Arab countries, including Jordan, issued similar warnings.
