A vessel that leaked oil into the waters of Aqaba two months ago left the port city after committing to pay JD1 million in compensation for damage to the marine environment, said Nidal Majali, Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Commissioner for Tourism and Environment.
He told Petra in an interview Monday that the compensation is proportionate to the damage caused to a number of berths at the container and passenger terminals and on southern beaches in the Aqaba marine reserve.
He said the cleanup by the Prince Hamzah Pollution Control Center of the Aqaba Company for the Management and Operation of Ports, ASEZA teams and other authorities in the city, took 16 days battling the oil slick that spread along a large area of the Red Sea port.
ASEZA has ordered the ship to be impounded pending legal action by the Aqaba Prosecutor.petra
