Amman – Khalil Al-Haj Toufiq, Chairman of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of identifying economic, trade, and service opportunities, as well as exploring non-traditional markets and new areas of cooperation between Jordan and Uzbekistan to boost their trade exchanges.
During a virtual meeting with Jordan's Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Dimai Haddad, and attended by Vice Presidents Nabil Al-Khatib and Bahjat Hamdan, along with Deputy Secretary Falah Al-Saghir, Al-Haj Toufiq stressed the role the Jordanian embassy in Uzbekistan could play in providing a database of exportable goods and the Uzbek market's needs.
According to a statement from the chamber on Saturday, the meeting followed a previous one with an Uzbek official delegation that visited the Amman Chamber of Commerce. The aim was to evaluate trade exchange volumes, address trade barriers between the two countries, and outline a new phase of cooperation within the private sector to enhance trade and establish investment partnerships.
Al-Haj Toufiq mentioned that the Jordanian embassy in Tashkent would arrange specialized virtual meetings for sectors such as trade, services, IT, tourism, transportation, and food, in coordination with the Tashkent Chamber of Commerce. This would allow for the evaluation of outcomes and the identification of goods and services that could enter the Uzbek market, while exploring opportunities to attract Uzbek investments to Jordan, in preparation for an official Jordanian trade delegation’s visit to Uzbekistan.
Despite the available opportunities and potential, trade exchanges between the two countries remain below expectations, requiring further efforts to improve and remove any obstacles hindering the flow of goods in both directions.
Ambassador Haddad pointed out that Jordan is keen to maintain strong relations with all friendly nations, with Uzbekistan holding a special place. He praised the Jordanian private sector's efforts to strengthen cooperation and expressed his readiness to collaborate fully with both the Amman and Tashkent chambers of commerce to facilitate business.
He also noted that an official Jordanian trade delegation's visit to Uzbekistan would provide an opportunity to explore ways to boost trade and discover new areas for cooperation.
Haddad highlighted that Uzbekistan's economy relies primarily on agriculture, textiles, and the production of dried fruits, canned foods, and pharmaceuticals. He also pointed to challenges in increasing trade, particularly the lack of direct flights between the two countries, but suggested that alternative commercial transport routes could be explored.
Members of the board emphasized that a Jordanian trade delegation’s visit to Uzbekistan would be a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in economic, trade, and investment fields. They also called for increased tourism cooperation, especially in promoting religious tourism, and the promotion of Uzbekistan through Jordanian tourism companies. Additionally, they stressed the importance of improving transportation options, proposing land routes through Turkey and Iraq to facilitate trade.
