A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the area off the Tanimbar Islands, causing residents to flee their homes although a tsunami warning was lifted three hours later, with initial reports of limited damage.
The Tanimbar Islands include about 30 islands and follow the Maluku province in eastern Indonesia.
At least four aftershocks were monitored after the strong earthquake, which was felt in some parts of northern Australia.
Officials with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that at least 15 houses and two schools were damaged in the quake, while one person was injured.
The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5 and occurred at 2:47 am local time yesterday, Monday, at a depth of 130 km, after it was initially reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.7 degrees. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake had a magnitude of 7.6.
The tsunami warning was lifted at 5:43 am.
More than 300 people were killed in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck West Java last November.
