Indirect talks between delegations from Hamas and Israel on the Gaza conflict began Monday in Sharm El-Sheikh, according to Al-Cairo News.
The negotiations, which also involve mediators from Egypt, the US, and Qatar, follow Hamas’s agreement to release all detainees in Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, under a US plan aimed at ending the two-year-long war.
The talks take place ahead of the second anniversary of Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, which sparked the Gaza war.
US President Donald Trump, who unveiled the plan on 29 September, urged negotiators Sunday to “move quickly,” noting “very positive initial talks” over the weekend with Hamas prior to the Egypt meetings.
The US plan calls for a ceasefire, release of all detainees within 72 hours of Hamas’s attack, gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and Hamas disarmament.
