Jordanian citizens, from the top of the pyramid, i.e. His Majesty the King (may God protect and protect him) to any ordinary citizen, are interested in precipitation, depressions, and the water level in dams, because simply water is life and has great positive effects on the citizens’ livelihood, especially with regard to the agricultural sector, both plant and animal, and water supply. Drinking during the summer, which has become a preoccupation for citizens and decision makers, taking into account that the limited water resources in the Kingdom result from its dependence mainly on the amounts of rainfall, which are characterized by irregularity in terms of spatial and temporal distribution from year to year, in light of climate change affecting the continuity of water. Our water resources, which were originally described as scarce and fluctuating.
I am presenting this introduction with a lot of optimism and thanks for what God has bestowed upon us this year in terms of abundant rain and goodness distributed over the winter and spring months, in a positive way.
The data and statistics of the Meteorological Department and the Ministry of Water and Irrigation indicate that the amount of water falling in all governorates of the Kingdom, from the beginning of the season until this date, has approached 110.0% of the long-term annual average (which is defined as the total rainfall for the last 83 years divided by number), and it constituted 139.0% of the amount of rain that fell in the Kingdom in the previous rainy season, i.e. the year 2021/2022. As for the stock of dams, which is the most important national strategic source of water supply during the summer, it has reached to date about 44.0%, or the equivalent of 121.0 million cubic meters, which is a good stock to fill the water deficit in the drinking water and irrigated agriculture sectors during the coming summer, and therefore we will witness, God willing. A comfortable and water-safe summer for the citizens, without any significant problems.
Rainy years, as is the case this year, in which rain rates are higher than the general average, have a positive impact on economic growth in general, especially since water supply is one of the most important inputs for economic activities that depend on and are greatly affected by water scarcity and availability. There is no doubt that the rain falls at the end of the current rainy season, and as is the case these days, it will have a positive effect on summer crops because the recent rains will keep the soil moist for a long time to come. As for the rain-fed crops, they will benefit from abundant and late rainfall. The season of rain-fed nuts and fruits will be abundant, especially in the central and northern regions of Jordan.
As for the natural pastures, especially in the south and east of the Kingdom, they will have a positive impact on the forage breeders in terms of not relying entirely on dry fodder. Livestock.
The current rainy season is rainy with distinction, and it has kept away from us the specter of lean years and its drought. However, as a result of the water situation that we have been living in for many years, it is incumbent on all of us to cooperate to preserve every of water and rationalize its consumption and prudent management until we find it when we need it.
