At least 66 people were killed after Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the Philippines on Monday, according to the country’s civil defence officials on Wednesday, in the latest toll from the rare and severe flooding.

Philippine News Agency quoted civil defence official Rafelito Alejandro as saying that densely populated urban areas were among the hardest hit, with 49 of the deaths recorded in Cebu province.

Entire towns were submerged on Tuesday as residents sought refuge on rooftops from muddy floodwaters that swept away cars, trucks, and even large shipping containers.
