Foreign airlines receive warning from Israel Civil Aviation Authority that coming weekend marks sensitive period amid rising tension between United States, Israel and Iran, Israeli media report Sunday.
According to Channel 12 and Times of Israel, authority head Shmuel Zakai sends letter to foreign carriers, does not rule out renewed closure of Israeli airspace, similar to steps taken during Israel-Iran confrontations in October 2024 and June 2025.
Channel 13 reports escalation with Iran already affects international flights to Israel, with widespread cancellations of scheduled services.
German airline Lufthansa and Italian carrier ITA extend suspension of night flights to Israel, while Dutch airline KLM cancels all flights to Israel until further notice. Air France announces cancellation of Tel Aviv flights Friday due to escalating regional tension.
Israeli news site Walla reports Israeli airlines ease booking cancellation and rescheduling policies in anticipation of possible US attack on Iran. Measures apply to El Al, Israir and Arkia, main civilian airlines in Israel.
Evacuation preparations
Transport Minister Miri Regev reveals Wednesday that Israeli civilian airlines prepare to evacuate aircraft fleets from Israeli airports to destinations abroad, to protect them from potential Iranian missile attacks in event of US strike on Iran.
US President Donald Trump threatens in recent weeks to launch military strike against Iran over its handling of widespread protests. Trump later signals partial retreat, saying Tehran halts planned executions of protesters. He then states Thursday that large US ‘military fleet’ heads towards Gulf region, adding: ‘We are watching Iran.’
