Standard & Poor's (S&P) Global Ratings has issued a stark warning regarding the evolving nature of the Middle East conflict, noting that it has transitioned into a "hybrid war." This new phase involves massive cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure and economic systems, significantly raising risks for the global economy and supply chains.
The report highlights that Jordan ranks third regionally in the volume of conflict-related cyberattacks, following Israel and Kuwait. Despite the high frequency of these attempts, Jordan has recorded no actual disruptions to vital services or economic systems. Analysts attribute this success to the effectiveness of the Kingdom's local cybersecurity defenses and the resilience of its digital infrastructure, which have successfully absorbed electronic shocks before they could escalate into operational crises.
Key details from the S&P report include:
Targeted Sectors: Attacks—largely attributed to Iran-sponsored groups—have focused on government portals, the financial sector, energy grids, and telecommunications to destabilize economic security.
Maritime Impact: Satellite navigation systems (GPS) have faced significant interference, affecting more than 1,100 ships in the Arabian Gulf. This poses a direct threat to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for 20% of global oil and gas exports.
Economic Risks: The agency warns that continued hybrid warfare could lead to increased operational costs for companies and a broader threat to regional economic stability.
