Middle East University launched the third International Conference on Scientific Journalism, organized by the Faculty of Media under the patronage of the Chairman of the University's Board of Trustees, Dr. Yaqoub Nasir-Eddin, and in the presence of University President Professor Salam Al-Mahadin.
The conference, opened by media personality Professor Hani Al-Badri, saw wide participation from researchers representing 10 Arab countries and various universities. Notable media institutions including Al-Mamlaka TV attended, alongside journalists from various news outlets and Jordanian media faculties, aiming to redefine the role of scientific journalism amid rapid digital transformations.
Dr. Yaqoub Nasir-Eddin stated that media serves as a lever for national interests across political, economic, social, and administrative levels, emphasizing its pivotal role as the "fourth estate." He noted that specialized journalism acts as a primary defense against misleading and false information.
Nasir-Eddin highlighted Artificial Intelligence as an indispensable tool in the modern labor market that cannot replace the human element. He added that educational institutions face the challenge of balancing critical thinking skills with applied skills and mastering AI prompt engineering, noting the shortage of high-quality Arabic-language data for AI in the Arab world.
President Dr. Al-Mahadin emphasized the importance of scientific journalism in simplifying and making knowledge accessible to the public, noting that the conference raises fundamental questions about the concept of truth in the age of AI.
Dean of the Faculty of Media Dr. Ramez Abu Hasira explained that holding the conference in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day reflects the close link between freedom of expression and professional responsibility, aiming to enhance scientific research regarding the future of scientific journalism.
Sessions covered strategic axes including the role of AI in simplifying scientific knowledge, challenges related to scientific accuracy and content integrity, and ethical dilemmas of algorithmic reliance, including bias, content ownership, and transparency. The conference also discussed transformations in scientific newsrooms and mechanisms for employing AI in data collection and analysis while maintaining human editorial roles.
