The head coach of the Jordanian national football team, Jamal Ammouta, stated that the final scoreline against Austria does not accurately reflect the high level of performance displayed by "Al-Nashama," despite acknowledging the clear gap in experience between the two sides.
Speaking in a post-match press conference on Wednesday, Ammouta remarked that the national team "played a great match characterized by courage and initiative." He added that "the result does not reflect the immense effort of the Jordanian team, even though the structural differences are vast and the Austrian players possess extensive experience in European championships, unlike our squad."
A Historic Debut and Match Timeline
The national team kicked off its historic, first-ever participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 finals with a hard-fought 3-1 defeat against Austria in their opening Group J fixture.
The key moments of the match unfolded as follows:
20th Minute: Romano Schmid opened the scoring to put the Austrian team ahead 1-0.
50th Minute: Ali Olwan found the back of the net to equalize for Al-Nashama, scoring Jordan's first-ever goal in World Cup history.
76th Minute: Austria regained the lead after an unfortunate own goal deflected off Jordanian defender Yazan Al-Arab.
90+12 Minute: Marko Arnautović sealed the victory for Austria, converting a late penalty deep into stoppage time.
Looking Ahead
Despite the opening setback, the national team maintains a positive outlook as they look to compensate and secure vital points in their upcoming Group J fixtures against Algeria and Argentina.
