The 4th Monodrama Theater Festival is set to launch on the evening of Sunday, July 26, at the theaters of the Royal Cultural Center in Amman. Held as part of the 40th edition of the Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts, the event will feature theatrical performances from Jordan and 10 Arab countries.
According to a press release issued by the festival management on Friday, the esteemed Jordanian actress Qamar Al-Safadi has been chosen as the personality of this fourth edition. The festival will also honor a selection of prominent stars, including Lebanese actress Julia Kassar and Syrian actor Abdel Moneim Amiry.
The performances participating this year include: the plays Hoor and The Last Lunch from Jordan; Al-Hakurah from Palestine; The Nominee by Chance from Bahrain; Master of the Stage from Syria; Emotional Auction from Saudi Arabia; Smoke from Iraq; Letters Before Death from Morocco; Cage from Tunisia; The Fetus from Libya; In Red Lipstick from Sudan; and The Arrival from Egypt.
In the statement, Festival Director and actress Abeer Issa said, "This festival began as the seed of a dream that lingered with me for years—for Jordan to have a specialized festival that embraces this difficult and beautiful art form, which places an actor completely alone facing the stage and the audience."
Issa added, "Today, as we launch the fourth edition within the activities of the 40th Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts, I can say with great pride and honor that the dream has not only been realized, but has also established itself as a major cornerstone on both the Jordanian and Arab creative scenes, mapping out a distinguished path that reflects our passion as artists."
She noted that the festival has developed a clear identity and characteristics that express the aspirations and vision of theater practitioners. It is no longer just a platform for performances, but has transformed into a space that delivers what its audience truly deserves, as well as a cultural bridge that enhances mutual exchange between Jordanian theater makers and their Arab peers.
Welcoming guests from sister nations, Issa stated, "The theater has always been, and will remain, a home that accommodates all our dreams, transcending all geography."
The daily festival performances will take place at 7:00 PM on the Circular Theater and at 9:00 PM on the Main Theater at the Royal Cultural Center.
The opening ceremony will be held on Sunday, July 26, at 7:00 PM on the Main Theater, and the festival will conclude with a ceremony on the same stage on Saturday, August 1.
The participating works will compete for the following awards: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Scenography, Best Script, Best Directing, in addition to the Special Jury Prize.
A critical seminar titled "Monodrama and its Dilemmas in Arab Theater" will also be held during the festival. It will feature Dr. Yousif Al-Hamdan from Bahrain, Abdulrazzaq Al-Rubaiee from the Sultanate of Oman, and director Zaid Mustafa from Jordan, with media personality Rasmi Mahasneh moderating the session.
