Who Said Knowledge Needs a Government to Endure?

There are institutions that are merely built, and others that are crafted; the former thrive on money, while the latter live on ideas. Standing between the two, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation serves as a testament that culture does not need authority to endure, but rather a resolve that believes knowledge is not a luxury, but a duty.
Few realize that the real challenge lies not in launching a cultural institution, but in protecting it against time. Launching requires vision, but sustaining demands faith—and therein lies the story.
The true achievement was not merely the birth of the foundation under the umbrella of Arab Bank, but that those who succeeded the founder led the bank while preserving the same name, safeguarding the same core idea, and resisting the temptation so many fall into: the urge to rename achievements after themselves or manufacture personal glory at the expense of institutional legacy.
This is the hardest test of leadership: to add to what you inherited without erasing the name of who came before you, to make the institution greater than the individuals within it, and to believe that history does not immortalize those who swap out signs, but those who preserve meaning.
That is why the name Abdul Hameed Shoman remained present—not because the man needed an introduction, but because those who followed possessed the courage to respect the legacy. They understood that great institutions are not driven by ego, but by ideas, and that the name worthy of surviving is one that has transformed into a value, not just an individual.
Perhaps this is what sets the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation apart. It is not a public relations arm, a venue for image polishing, or a seasonal social responsibility project. It declares—through actions before words—that responsibility is a duty, not a donation; a core work philosophy, not a media campaign; and an integral part of an economic institution's identity, not an entry in an annual report. It is the identity of an institution that recognized its own success is incomplete without the success of its community.
For this reason, it did not stop at granting awards, supporting researchers, sponsoring arts, nurturing music, encouraging creativity, or building libraries. Instead, it built an entire ecosystem that views culture as a soft power designed to build people before building projects. Its libraries, reaching into outer governorates, were not just structures; they were messages affirming that knowledge should not remain confined to the capital, and that everyone on the margins deserves the exact same opportunity as those at the center.
Under dozens of initiatives—days, weeks, forums, awards, and lectures—the goal remained singular: to cultivate a human being who knows, thinks, questions, and creates.
In an era where social responsibility for many institutions has become a marketed slogan, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation proved that responsibility is practiced, not proclaimed—and that culture is not a side activity, but a long-term investment in the nation's future.
Perhaps that is why the foundation lived on while many names faded. Impact alone remains. The person who puts their name before their mission departs when they depart; but the one who puts their mission before their name becomes part of the people's collective memory.
Here, those who successively managed the foundation and led Arab Bank deserve recognition—not because they altered the legacy, but because they preserved it, built upon it, and allowed the work and achievement to take center stage, believing that the greatest leaders are not those seeking to immortalize their own names, but the idea they carry.
And for that, we must say... Thank you, Sabih.
