Duarte Santos, president of Portuguese club Andorinha, criticized the way the technical staff of the Portugal national team handled Cristiano Ronaldo, arguing that the team captain was subjected to a "trap" and did not deserve to have things end with him in this manner.
Speaking in statements reported by the Portuguese network SIC, Santos said that what happened represents "a sad day for Portuguese, global football, and the Portuguese people," criticizing the manner in which Ronaldo was treated within the national team.
He added: "They set a trap for him and pulled a move he did not deserve. If they did not want to rely on Ronaldo, they should have made that clear before announcing the call-up squad. It was unnecessary to reach this stage and exclude the best player in the world, the best player currently, and the best Portuguese player."
The Andorinha president criticized what he described as a "lack of transparency" in managing the situation, pointing out that the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, was counting on Ronaldo not only from a sporting perspective, but also for the financial and marketing value he represents.
Santos also directed direct criticism at Jorge Jesus, manager of the Portugal national team, asserting that the coach wanted to assert his authority over the team, and stating that "ego" played a role in how the team captain was treated.
He added: "On one hand, Jesus will win over everyone who dislikes Ronaldo, but on the other hand, he dealt a blow to the best Portuguese player in history, and a blow to football."
The club president called for the issue to have been handled through sitting down and engaging in dialogue between the parties instead of reaching the current situation, emphasizing that the dispute could have been resolved "in a way that saves face for everyone."
Andorinha holds a special place in Ronaldo's career, as the Portuguese star began his footballing journey in the ranks of the club in the city of Funchal on the island of Madeira, before subsequently moving to Nacional and then the Sporting CP academy.
Santos' statements come amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Ronaldo's situation with the Portuguese national team and Jorge Jesus's management of the upcoming period, at a time when recent developments have raised widespread questions in the Portuguese media.
