Airspace Advisory: European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recommends avoiding parts of the Jeddah Flight Information Region (FIR), adding new conflict zones in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Airport Attack Impact: Follows two attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that resulted in three Saudi fatalities and multiple injuries.
Saudia Airlines Operations: Confirmed one employee death and damage to a parked aircraft without passengers; operations at Riyadh airport fully resumed Thursday evening.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued updated safety recommendations advising airlines against operating within designated portions of Saudi airspace under the Jeddah Flight Information Region (FIR), incorporating a new area in northwestern Saudi Arabia into its Conflict Zone Information Bulletin.
The advisory comes in the wake of two attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday, which resulted in the deaths of three Saudi citizens and injuries to several individuals of various nationalities, according to statement released by the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).
GACA detailed that the initial attack struck airport infrastructure, while the secondary attack targeted a Saudia Airlines passenger aircraft positioned on the tarmac. Flight operations and air traffic control at the airport have since been restored to normal capacity.
Saudia Airlines confirmed that one of its staff members was killed in the strike and reported structural damage to an aircraft parked on the tarmac, clarifying that no passengers were aboard at the time of the event. The national carrier confirmed that all scheduled flights and airport operations at King Khalid International Airport officially resumed at 6:00 PM on Thursday.
