MADRID — Spanish sports daily Marca has sparked renewed discussion regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time scoring record after adjusting his career tally to 980 official goals, following his latest strike for Al Nassr against Al Diriyah in a 3-0 victory in the Saudi Pro League.
The adjustment stems from a long-standing statistical discrepancy regarding a goal scored during Ronaldo’s tenure with Real Madrid. For years, Marca credited Ronaldo with 451 goals for the Spanish club, differing from official La Liga and global database records which attribute 450 goals to the Portuguese star.
The debate traces back to the 2010–2011 La Liga season, when Ronaldo took a free-kick against Real Sociedad that deflected off his Portuguese compatriot Pepe before crossing the goal line. While La Liga and official statisticians officially credited the goal to Pepe as the last player to touch the ball, Marca attributed it to Ronaldo, giving him 41 goals for that specific league campaign instead of the official 40.
Following a long-standing debate, the Spanish publication has now aligned its records with official governing bodies, bringing its published career tally to 980 official goals across club and international competitions.
Ronaldo's milestone comes after he opened the scoring in the 23rd minute against Al Diriyah, capitalizing on a rebound following a shot by French winger Kingsley Coman. Samu Costa subsequently added a second, before Coman sealed the 3-0 victory in the second half, lifting Al Nassr to 19 points in the Saudi Pro League standings. Al Nassr prepares to face Al Ahli on October 15 following the international break.
With his current tally standing at 980 official goals, Ronaldo requires 20 more goals to reach the historic milestone of 1,000 career goals. His goals are distributed across his career as follows:
Real Madrid: 450 goals
Manchester United: 145 goals (across two spells)
Portugal National Team: 146 goals
Al Nassr: 133 goals
Juventus: 101 goals
Sporting CP: 5 goals
