Vitinha, Paris Saint-Germain's playmaker, spoke about the tense atmosphere inside the Portugal national team camp following the public dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Jorge Jesus, expressing his hope that the crisis will be resolved and that the team captain will return to the squad.
The Portuguese midfielder's statements came following Paris Saint-Germain's 4-2 away victory against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League, a match in which Vitinha scored his team's third goal.
In the mixed zone after the match, Vitinha spoke to TNT Sports Brasil with a diplomatic tone, keen on maintaining team unity, emphasizing his desire to see the dispute end and Ronaldo return to international duty.
Vitinha said: "The international break was chaotic and emotional. All I hope for is that things are resolved in the best possible way, that Ronaldo returns, and that everything goes well. The truth is, that is what we all want. I hope for his return and that everything gets settled."
He added: "We all want that to happen, and I hope it does."
The roots of the dispute trace back to Jesus's decision to keep Ronaldo on the substitutes' bench for the entirety of Portugal's UEFA Nations League match against Norway, which ended in a 2-1 victory for the Portuguese national team, despite the forward warming up for 30 minutes under the impression that he would feature in the match.
Ronaldo felt that the manager had breached his trust, prompting him to issue a statement on October 6 revealing details of their private conversations and accusing Jesus of breaking his promises twice, including a commitment to clarify the situation during the post-match press conference.
His anger led him to leave the national team camp in Copenhagen prior to the match against Denmark. Although Ronaldo later apologized to his teammates, the Portuguese Football Federation imposed a provisional suspension on the player on October 9, treating the disciplinary case as an urgent matter.
Under federation regulations, players who fail to report for national team duty could face a suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside a substantial monetary fine.
With the provisional suspension in effect and the veteran forward potentially facing a penalty of up to six months, signs of a resolution between Ronaldo and Jesus remain absent, as both parties maintain their respective stances.
This dispute casts a shadow over the Portuguese national team's preparations for its upcoming international fixtures next month, at a time when Vitinha looks to refocus his attention on his commitments with Paris Saint-Germain, which is preparing to host Barcelona in a high-profile Champions League clash next week.
