As part of the ongoing scientific activities at Al-Kindi Hospital, a specialized lecture was held last Thursday on modern procedures for managing childhood obesity and diets. The session was delivered by Dr. Tareq Abdul Ghani Rabaie and Ms. Bushra Al-Bitar, a clinical nutritionist and prenatal yoga instructor. The event was organized in cooperation with Arab Engineers Trading Company for Medical Devices and took place at the hospital’s main conference center. It aimed to raise awareness and knowledge, positively impacting the quality of services provided to patients at this major medical facility.
Dr. Tareq provided a comprehensive explanation of childhood obesity, its proper management, and key symptoms such as shortness of breath, joint pain, excessive sweating, fatigue, acid reflux, sleep apnea, snoring, and others. He emphasized the importance of early intervention and control.
He also addressed the potential health risks and complications arising from untreated childhood obesity, including asthma, heart diseases, joint pain, sleep disorders, diabetes, and psychological disorders.
Dr. Tareq outlined the essential steps to prevent these risks, including regular physical exercise, following a healthy diet, reducing fast food consumption, getting adequate sleep, education, mental health support, and some medical treatments.
Ms. Bushra Al-Bitar discussed the causes of childhood obesity and treatment methods, highlighting that one major cause is gestational diabetes in mothers, which can cause insulin resistance in newborns leading to weight gain. Other factors include lack of exercise, genetics, eating while watching TV or using tablets, fast food consumption, and psychological influences from the surrounding environment and family. She explained that treatment involves substituting unhealthy foods with healthy alternatives that are visually and tastefully acceptable.
It’s worth noting that Al-Kindi Hospital is a private facility offering a wide range of medical specialties, including bariatric and cosmetic surgery, liposuction, vascular surgery, fertility center, kidney stone treatment, interventional radiology, cancer detection (especially breast cancer), organ transplantation, cardiac catheterization, open-heart surgery, gastrointestinal and biliary endoscopy, and a fully equipped emergency department with modern ambulances.
