WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump said Friday his administration had “apparently lost India and Russia to China,” citing closer trilateral ties among Beijing, Moscow and New Delhi.
Posting on Truth Social with a photo of Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi, Trump wrote: “Looks like we lost India and Russia to darker, deeper China. I wish them a long and prosperous future together.”
The remarks followed a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit where Xi and Putin pushed for a “multipolar” order away from US and European dominance.
Trump last month imposed 25% tariffs on imports from India over its purchases of Russian oil, straining bilateral ties.
Despite criticising the “China-Russia-India axis,” Trump told a radio interview Tuesday he was “not worried” about the alliance, though in other posts accused leaders of China, Russia and North Korea of “conspiring” against Washington.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday Trump’s approach to international affairs was “more pragmatic” than Europe’s, favouring “deals over wars,” adding Moscow preferred diplomatic solutions in Ukraine.
Trump has oscillated between condemning Russian strikes in Ukraine and suggesting Putin seeks to end the war. Moscow has welcomed his stance, while accusing Europe of trying to “undermine settlement efforts.”
Three weeks ago, Trump met Putin in Alaska and said he planned to speak with him again “soon,” fuelling speculation about a possible role in reshaping global relations.
