The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday announced its readiness to act as a neutral mediator to help return Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners to their families.

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said the organisation is also prepared to deliver and safely distribute humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.

Indirect talks between Hamas, Israel, and US mediators began Monday in Egypt to secure the release of detainees in Gaza and end the nearly two-year conflict in the territory.

The negotiations coincide with the second anniversary of Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, which sparked the Gaza war.

US President Donald Trump, who unveiled the plan on 29 September, urged negotiators to “move quickly,” noting “very positive initial talks” over the weekend with Hamas. The plan calls for a ceasefire, release of all detainees within 72 hours, gradual Israeli withdrawal, and Hamas disarmament.

Trump warned Hamas that he “will not accept any delay” in implementing the first phase, which prioritises releasing all detainees this week.
