Sheikh Talal Al-Fahd Al-Sabah was elected President of the Olympic Council of Asia for the period 2023-2027 at the 42nd General Assembly meeting, on Saturday, in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
Talal Al-Fahd won 24 votes compared to 20 for his rival, Hussein Al-Muslim.
Sheikh Talal was succeeded by his brother, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahd Al-Sabah, who held the position for more than three decades, specifically since 1991, and his martyr father, Sheikh Fahd Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, was head of the council from 1982 to 1990.
Talal Al-Fahd (58 years old) held several sports positions. He was president of the Kuwait Football Association and chairman of the Kuwait Olympic Committee. He also headed the Laws Committee of the Olympic Council of Asia.
In his speech before voting started, Sheikh Talal raised the slogan "One Asia, One Family" and focused on key points: good governance, financial sustainability, a plan to develop sports, activities, educational programs and high-level organization of the Asian Games.
He also pledged to increase funding for the 45 Olympic Committees that are members of the Olympic Council of Asia, and to bring about positive change.
In the elections for the position of Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia for West Asia, Qatari Thani Al Kuwari, Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, defeated his Emirati rival, Osama Al Shaafar, President of the Asian Cycling Federation, by 26 votes to 18.
