The Egyptian House of Representatives postponed on Monday the vote on a decision regarding authorizing the armed forces to take defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia, should Riyadh request it, to next Monday.
The council concluded its session without voting on the decision, after having adjourned Sunday's session dedicated to discussing the authorization, with meetings to resume on Monday.
The parliament had held its session chaired by Hisham Badawi, in response to a call issued by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday to hold an emergency session to consider authorizing the armed forces to take defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia if requested.
El-Sisi stated, during a graduation ceremony for new batches from the Egyptian Military Academy, that his country will take any measure to protect Saudi Arabia, calling on parliament to hold an emergency session to grant the necessary authorization if requested.
Earlier on Sunday, the Egyptian National Defense Council decided, during a meeting chaired by El-Sisi, to provide all necessary and possible forms of support to Saudi Arabia to defend its security, stability, and territorial integrity, without specifying the nature of this support.
The council emphasized, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency, Egypt's full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, stressing the intensification of political and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and resolve crises through peaceful means.
Article 152 of the Egyptian Constitution stipulates that the President of the Republic may not declare war or send the armed forces on a combat mission outside the country's borders except after consulting the National Defense Council and obtaining the approval of the House of Representatives by a two-thirds majority of its members.
These developments come light of ongoing military escalation by the Houthi militia since last July, which included attacks targeting civil aviation facilities and energy installations in Saudi Arabia.
